EUROPEAN FOOTBALL WEEKEND: TEN THINGS WE LEARNED
Run down of what happend over the european football weekend
The latest round of European fixtures gave us alot to talk about. From Chelsea’s big money spendings having a horrible day out to jude bellingham conquering the biggest stage, let's dive right into it.
No Kane no problem
With spurs losing their main man to Bayern Munich, there were serious concerns as to if they would be able to cope without one of the most prolific strikers in the world. All those concerns were immediately put to bed with a statement win in Ange Postecoglu’s first premier league home game. Tottenham put two past Manchester united to seal their first win of the season. One goal from Pape Sarr and an ungoal from lisandro Martinez handed Tottenham hotspur their first win of the season. They will be looking to add to their impressive showing on Saturday when they take on Bournemouth away from home.
Jude Bellingham is literally flying at Real Madrid
After sealing a €103 million move from Borrusia Dortmund to Real Madrid, Jude Bellingham looks right at home, with the Englishman bagging three goals and an assist in his first two games with the Spanish side, and after winning back to back man of the match awards, €103 million has started to look like a bargain. He will be looking to continue his brilliant form on Friday when the Spanish giants face Celta Vigo.
€254 million penalty horror show at the London derby
There will surely be better days for Chelsea’s €254 million duo after the horror show on Sunday. West ham had a flying start against the pride of London when Aguerd headed home a pinpoint corner kick from new boy, James Ward-Prowse in the 7th minute of the London derby. A moment of pure magic from 19 year old Carney Chukwuemeka leveled proceedings in the 28th minute and Chelsea looked to be taking the lead in the 43rd minute when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Raheem Sterling. Enzo Fernandez stepped up to take the penalty but saw his penalty kick saved by Alphonse Areola. Chelsea was punished in the 53rd minute when Michail Antonio fired the hammers ahead. In the 61st minute, Moise caicedo was subbed into the game. It would be an outing to forget for the €133 million man as he would concede a penalty in the 95th minute of the game which West ham would go on to score, winning them the game.
Manchester united start the season slow. AGAIN
Manchester united began last campaign with back to back defeats against Brighton and Brentford respectively. Over the course of the campaign, they turned it around and had a successful season. After signing 3 players during the transfer window, the fans would have expected Manchester united to have a much better start campaign, however that has not been the case. After a scrappy win against wolves, Manchester united fans complained about the lack of cohesion and many have been concerned with the new-look midfield, with some even suggesting that it cannot work out. The away game against spurs brought about more concerns as Erik Ten Hag started the exact same team that started against wolves. Although Manchester united looked better in the first half, they had no goals to show for it and they were seriously punished for it in the second half when a goal from Pape Sarr and an ungoal from Lisandro Martinez saw Manchester united leave with no points. They will hope to bounce back and show what they are about on Saturday when they host Nottingham forest.
Victor Osimhen starts as he means to go on
Napoli kicked off their Serie A campaign on Saturday with a win against newly promoted Frosinone. Napoli went behind in the 7th minute after Abdou Harroui converted a penalty. Matteo Politano pulled Napoli back into the game at the 24th and from there it was the Victor Osimhen show. He netted a brace, scoring in the 42nd and 79th minute. He will definitely be looking to defend both the Scudetto and his golden boot this season and he has started exactly how he would love to go on. He will be hoping for another impressive outing on Sunday when Napoli face Sassuolo.
Harry Kane put super cup heart break behind him
Harry Kane completed his €100 million switch from Tottenham Hotspurs to Bayern Munich this summer transfer window. He is yet to win a trophy in his senior career, but he had a chance to win the super cup with Bayern Munich in his first game at the club. The game ended in heart break with Dani Olmo netting a hat trick to hand RB Leipzig the trophy instead. Harry Kane seems to have put the loss behind him as he put in a 10/10 performance in his Bundesliga debut with a goal and an assist against Werder Bremen. He will be aiming to continue his red-hot form on Sunday when they face Augsburg.
PSG still yet to click
PSG are without a win in the League one season so far. After a summer of big changes with players like Lionel Messi and Neymar junior leaving the club, a host of new players brought in and Ex Spain and Barcelona Manger, Luis Enrique being brought in to lead the club, fans would have expected a scintillating start to the season. They have however been faced with disappointment, with two draws and only one goal scored in their first two games and currently sit in the bottom half of the table. It’s only been two games so the alarm bells won’t be ringing at the moment but the team needs to get back to winning ways and defend their League one title, and they will be looking to do just that when they face lens on Saturday.
Barcelona get back to winning ways
Barcelona kick started their title defense against Getafe. The game ended a goal less draw. It was a really underwhelming game as both teams were reduced to ten men while their biggest rivals Real Madrid got off to a flying start. Barcelona put all that behind them against Cadiz this weekend. Two late goals from Pedri and Ferran Torres saw FC Barcelona get their first win of the season. They will be looking to continue in winning ways against Villarreal when they face off on Sunday.
Could Brighton mount a really surprising title race?
Brighton have been really impressive in the start of the premier league season as they currently top the table with six points from six and eight goals scored while only conceding two goals. They have been miles ahead of the two teams they have faced so far and are playing one of the most attractive brand of football in the world right now. Although it has just been two games, I would not put it past them to mount a title race. The whole world will definitely be watching them on Saturday as they face West Ham United.
Manchester City are still the team to beat
Manchester city have showed that they are still the team to beat in last three games, winning all three of them and snapping up a trophy as well. They faced a well drilled and quite frankly, a highly impressive Newcastle united team. Although it was a really close and heavily contested game, Manchester city came away with the win with a 31st minute strike from Julian Alvarez handing city the three points. They have won both of their premier league games this season, launching a very strong title defence. They will be looking to continue their strong start to the season when they face Sheffield United on Sunday
